Speed up menu display (Windows XP)

Microsoft Windows XP uses many visual effects to provide a rich, friendly interface. One of these settings allows menus to fade into view when you open them. This visual effect is so smooth that you may never have noticed it; however, the effect does cause menus to take a little longer to appear. On a fast computer, this shouldn't be an issue. But on a computer that isn’t responding as quickly as you'd like, you can make menus display faster. To speed up menu display
  • Click Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the Advanced tab. In the Performance area, click Settings.
  • On the Visual Effects tab in the Performance Options dialog box, clear the Fade or slide menus into view check box.
  • Click OK.
  • In the System Properties dialog box, click OK. Now when you click a menu, it will appear almost instantly.

    Spybot-Search and Destroy

Those of you that already have Spybot Search and Destroy should start it up and check for updates. They have released a few lately and you should keep it up to date for security reasons. If you don't have Spybot Search and Destroy, I would recommend that you download it and run it to check for spyware, ads, etc that might have found their way into your computer. This is a free program and can be downloaded here, www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

    Find unclaimed property

(This tip was sent in by newsletter subscriber Jody) "One of my favorite websites is www.unclaimed.org where you can search for property that might be owed you from a state where you may have previously resided. Not only have I discovered money from a long-lost insurance policy, I've guided dozens of my friends and relatives to the site where they found they, too, were owed money." (Thanks for the tip Jody.)
