Rvers Computer Help Newsletter 1-11-08

To make sure you continue to receive the newsletter in your Inbox (so they're not sent to a junk folder or bulk mail folder), please add newsletter@rverscomputerhelp.com to your address book or safe sender list.

(Please read the WARNING at the bottom of the Newsletter)

QUESTION: How do you remove those little arrows from the shortcut icons on my desktop?

If you are using Windows XP, you can remove the arrows using TweakUI. You can get the program for free in the right column of this newsletter under Windows XP Power Toys. If you are a Windows Vista user, you can get a free program also. You can download it here FxVisor 1.0

QUESTION: I would like to be able to forward emails but don't want to broadcast all the email locations to everyone in the world. Is there a way to strip off all the email addresses that are sent on most emails?

I don't know how to do it in AOL, but with most of the others, you click the Forward button, you can highlight everything you want to get rid of and hit the backspace key to get rid of it. Sometimes you have to highlight just the part that you want to send, copy it and paste it into a new email to send it on.

Receiving the Newsletter

Recently I got a new computer and when I imported the address book for the newsletter, I somehow lost some of the addresses. Seems every week I get a email from someone that is no longer receiving the newsletter. We are really sorry that this happened and are doing everything we can to recover the addresses we might have lost when we made the change over. In the meantime, if you think you might have missed some issues, you can go to our archives page and read them there. The page is usually about four issues behind. You can check the archives here www.rverscomputerhelp.com/archives.html

New Survey (GPS)

Several of you responded to our GPS survey and I have posted the results at the web site. Hopefully I will get more of you to respond and I will update the page every week or so.You can check out the survey here www.rverscomputerhelp.com/gpssurvey.html  If you would like to email us with the brand of your GPS, you can do so here gps@rvinginfo.com

Check Disk

In Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, you use the Check Disk utility to scan your computer's hard disk for errors and try to correct them.

To run Check Disk, select Start > Left click Computer, right-click your hard disk icon (Usually the "C" drive"), and then select Properties. The Local Disk Properties dialog box opens. On the Tools tab, click the Check Now button under Error-checking. Click Check Now, in the Check Disk dialog box, check one or both of the available options (Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors).

If you select both Check Disk options, a Windows message appears stating that the action can be performed only after a reboot (Restart). To continue with Check Disk, click Yes. The process resumes when you restart your computer. Depending on your system speed and hard disk capacity, this process could take a long time. ( On my computer it takes about 30 to 45 minutes).

Check Disk deals with two kinds of errors. The basic Check Disk operation finds and repairs logical errors in the disk's table of contents. These errors, if uncorrected, can cause problems reading and writing files and can even make Windows Vista itself crash. Therefore, it's a good idea to run Check Disk once a month or so (or immediately if you start experiencing errors and crashes in Windows Vista).

The other error Check Disk addresses is a physical bad spot on the surface of the disk. It attempts to relocate any data stored on that spot, and then it marks the bad spot as unusable. This type of error requires a time-consuming search, so Check Disk doesn't check this unless you mark the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkbox in the Check Disk dialog box. Perform this check if you start experiencing errors reading or writing to the disk.

Cleaning your computer keyboard (Desktop)

Clean your computer keyboard by turning it upside-down and gently tapping the bottom to dislodge any particles between the keys. Spray crevices with compressed air or use a specialized mini-vacuum to remove dirt and dust. Of course if you are cleaning your keyboard on a laptop, just use the compressed air.
