Adjusting screen brightness

Thanks to those that responded with the method that their laptops use to adjust screen brightness. Here are some of the responses.
  • On our HP laptop we use the FN key and F8 & F9 keys to raise or lower the brightness

  • Hi, I have a "Toshiba" Satellite L25-S119 notebook. I hold down the"FN" key & use the "F6" & "F7" keys for up & down to lighten & darken screen

    Quick launch bar

If you have opened more than one program, you might like to display and use the Quick Launch bar. The Quick Launch bar makes it easy to access frequently used programs like Windows Media Player and your e-mail, and to open an Internet Explorer window. Windows XP and Vista loads several programs in the Quick Launch, including Show Desktop. One click on Show Desktop minimizes all the programs on your desktop. Another click restores them just as you left them.
  • To show Quick Launch on the taskbar
  • Right click on the Task Bar
  • Click Toolbars and then Quick Launch
  • A few icons will appear in the lower left of your screen next to the Start button. Check out each of these to make yourself familiar with them. Next week I will show more of what you can do with the Quick launch feature.

    Bad laptop screen

Recently I had a bad experience with my Sony laptop. I started it up, but nothing appeared on the screen. I could hear the hard drive running and the activity light was blinking, but nothing on the screen. I searched the help section for my laptop, but find nothing that would help. I also searched Google and found several things to try, but again nothing that solved the problem. I could not stand the thought that I might have to have the screen replaced. The screens for laptops are not cheap and when I bought the laptop a few years ago, it was not cheap either. Well the good news is I got it working again by going to Sony's web site and searching the support section. There I found that sometimes the little switch that engages when you open and close the lid sometimes sticks. Low and behold after sticking the end of a plastic tooth pick into the hole a couple times, the screen appeared. I don't know if this happens with other brands of laptops, but if you ever run into the same situation, you might give it a try.

QUESTION: Why is there bumps on the F and J keyboard keys?

The bumps or nipples found on the F and J keys on the keyboard helps users correctly position their left and right hand on the keyboard without having to look at it. For example, without looking at the keyboard you can easily position your left index finger on the F and the right index finger on the J, which then positions all the remainder of your fingers in the correct position.
