How to tell if a web site is secure

When ordering off the Internet or exchanging personal information on a web site, it is a good idea to look for evidence that the web site is secure. A couple ways to do that, is to look for a padlock that will appear in the lower right of you screen near the clock or look to the address bar and see if "https" appears at the start of the web site address. These things may not appear at first, but may appear when you reach the order page or checkout page. If you are doing banking on the Internet and you do not see these things on the bank web site, I would call and see why. It could be that they are using another method to make their site secure.

Closing a Program that won't close(Windows XP)

Everyone that uses a computer has at one time ran into the problem of a program that refuses to close. This does not happen as often with Windows XP as it does with some of the older Windows operating systems. However it will happen every once in a while, here is what to do. Press the Ctrl, Alt, Delete keys simultaneously. The Windows Task Manager will open, in the list of programs that are running, highlight the program that you want to shut down and click End Task at the bottom of the Window. You can highlight the program by left clicking on the program name one time. Many times, a long side the program name will appear the words "Not responding", if these words are there, I would recommend restarting your computer after the program shuts down. Remember Restarting your computer is not the same as shutting it down and starting it back up again. You can read an article that I wrote a while back about the benefits of restarting your computer. www.rverscomputerhelp.com/restart.html

Here are some uses for the Winkey (Windows XP)

The Winkey is the key on your computer keyboard that has a flag on it, usually located on the same row as the space bar. For many computer user's the Winkey is a mysterious key that is very seldom used. However it has many uses that you might find helpful. I have written an article about the uses of the Winkey, you can view it here,  www.rverscomputerhelp.com/winkey.html

Well, the appointments have now turned into our vacation. We will probably be gone until the end of this month, which means we will not be able to get the October 20th newsletter out and the October 27th newsletter will be a day or two late. Sorry, we will try a make it up to you when we return.

Computer Term (DDR)

You may have seen DDR used to describe the type of memory that comes with the latest computers. The old type memory was called SDRAM. Here is a short explanation of the difference between the two.

DDR or (double data rate) memory reads data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal. SDRAM only carries information on the rising edge of a signal. Basically this allows the DDR module to transfer data twice as fast as SDRAM.
