System Restore (Windows Vista)

If you have Windows Vista and can't get your System Restore to work, it could be because you are running Norton Antivirus on your computer. First disable Norton then try System Restore again. Here is how to disable Norton, http://bertk.mvps.org/html/symantecdoc1.html

How to Speedup Browsing Folders

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers when you open Windows explorer. To stop XP from doing this follow the instructions below.
  • Open My Computer
  • Click on Tools menu
  • Click on Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab.
  • Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
  • Click Apply and OK
  • Restart your computer
You should see an increase in speed. If for some reason you would like to put the settings back the way they were, just reverse the proceedure.

    Turning on ClearType

Windows XP has a feature called ClearType. This text rendering method exists to smooth the appearance of the on-screen text. To try this method:
  • Right-click an empty area on your Desktop.
  • Select Properties
  • In the resulting Display Properties window, select the Appearance tab
  • Click the Effects button
  • Choose ClearType from the drop-down menu named: "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts".
  • Select OK and OK again to see how it looks
This works pretty good on LCD monitors, but it can also work on regular monitors as well. Try it, if you don't like it, reverse the proceedure to put things back like they were.

    Cool Web Site (Joost)

I ran across this web site the other day and decided to give it a try. So far it works pretty well. You can get their free download and watch recorded TV shows as well as some old movies. The picture quality is pretty good, every once in a while the picture will stutter depending on your Internet connection speed. If you have a dialup connection, don't even try it. This works well on a laptop if you have a good WiFi connection. You can check it out here, www.joost.com

How to turn on the on-screen keyboard

Windows comes with an on-screen keyboard if you ever need one. Lets say that your regular keyboard goes nuts and you are not able to use it for some reason. Until you can find a fix, you can use the on-screen keyboard by using your mouse to press the keys. Here is how to turn it on, Go to Start, Run and type in OSK and click OK.
