Forums Pages

Very soon we will have a new section available on the web site called forums. You have probably seen them before on other web sites, this will be for computer related subjects. Unlike the others where you have to sign in, these will be handled by email responses, that way I can control the content to keep out the bad stuff that forums have to fight with. Here are some of the subjects that will be included. If you can think of others, let us know so we can include them. You will also have the opportunity to add subjects by putting them on the subject line of an email.

    Network Cable

On our recent vacation, I noticed that more and more hotels and motels are going from wireless Internet connections to wired Internet connections. Wired connections are more secure and travelers are not able to sit near by the motel or hotel and pick up the signal. This way the motels and hotels are able to control how many people are on the network at one time. To connect to a wired connection, an ethernet cable is required, many places will provide them free of charge and one place we stayed, had the wire coming out of the wall. We also stayed at one place that ran out of cables, in that case you would have to provide your own. If you are going to be traveling in this manner, I would recommend getting a cable of your own. You can find them at Radio Shack, CompUSA, etc. I think a 6' cable would be fine, these cables will plug into the ethernet port on your laptop and into the recepticle that the hotel or motel provides in the room.

    Email Security

Internet Service Providers are under a lot of pressure from their users to provide more secure email boxes. As a result, it is becoming more common for us email users to have to set our own security settings. This means in many cases, that you will have to enter the email addresses of those people that you want to receive email from. We are receiving more and more returned newsletters every week because the newsletter address is being rejected by the email servers. If you have missed some newsletters, I would suggest you check with your ISP to see what else you are missing and take whatever steps are neccessary to assure that you are getting all of your mail. After we receive returned mail three weeks in a row, we remove the email address from the newsletter address book.

    DSL or Cable

I am sure you have noticed the war that is going on between the cable Internet companies and the phone services that offer DSL. We have cable where we are, but DSL is also avaiable. Recently Bobbi and I have installed DSL for a number of people in our area and it works fine. In most cases it is cheaper than cable and the speed is more than acceptable. My point here is do not be afraid to give DSL a try, you can probably save a bunch of money.

    Digital Camera Tips

Kodak has a nice section on their web site for digital camera tips and information. It is useful even if you have another brand of digital camera. Take a look, if you are like me, I can use all the help I can get when it comes to taking good digital camera pictures. Kodak

    Computer Term (PDA)

A pocket-sized computer that is designed to do specific tasks. PDAs typically include software to store phone numbers, appointments, and "to-do" lists. You use a special pen to input and access your information. PDAs can also contain a wireless fax modem.
