Re: Poor GrammarI would like to thank all of you that responded to the Poor Grammar comments that I made in last weeks newsletter. Many of you were very supportive, with some very nice comments. Also many responded with suggestions that I will certainly try. Bear with me, (or is it BARE with me), I just don't know !! (Grin) Anyway I am sure you know what I mean. Larry
Safe Internet Shopping ReminderWe have covered this in the newsletter and on the web sites before, but I think it is important enough to be repeated. Particularly at this time of year when we are all doing Holiday shopping. When buying online, make sure that when you get to the page where you pay for the products or give your credit card info, that you look for a locked padlock in the lower right corner of your monitor. Also look to see if the address in the address window at the top of the page starts with "https". You might see both of these or just one, either is okay. This tells you that you are ordering from a secure web site. If you do not see either of these, the locked padlock or the "https", I would not place the order. One other thing is if you are using Internet Explorer 7, the padlock might be located at the top of the page.
Web Site for Seniors (Update)After I listed the web site for seniors in last weeks newsletter, I received an email from Debra letting us know of another helpful web site for seniors. It is called "A Place for Mom". You can check it out here. www.aplaceformom.com
Outlook Express Spell CheckIf you have lost the spell checker in your Outlook Express, here is a free program that will give you back a spell checker. If you look under Tools in Outlook Express and notice that your spell checker is not lit or is grayed out, that is a indication that it is not working. This program will give it back. Check it out here, www.geocities.com/vampirefo
Windows Vista TipThose of you that have Windows Vista know that things are not located where they were in Windows XP. To find out where these things are located in Windows Vista, click on Start, Help and Support. Now click "Using Windows Vista", then from the next list click on "Windows XP vs Windows Vista Tips". There you will find much needed information about where things are located in Windows Vista.
Watching TV on your computerI like to watch TV reruns on my computer. The ones that I might have missed when they aired the first time. Here is a web site that has many programs to choose from, it is all free. My favorites are the National Geographic shows and several of the TV shows such as CSI, Numbers and older shows like Starsky and Hutch. Take a look, I think you will like it. You must have a high speed Internet connection for this to work. Sometimes the shows will freeze for a few seconds, it seems the longer you watch the better it gets. www.joost.com
QUESTION: When I try to open Microsoft Word or Excel it takes a long time to open. What can I do?Try this, with Microsoft Word open, click on Help at the top of the page, choose Detect and Repair. This sometimes works and sometimes not, if it doesn't fix the problem, then there might be a problem somewhere else on your computer that is causing the slow response. We can look for another solution if the Detect and Repair fails to fix the problem. Let me know. Larry
QUESTION: Help I can receive my mail, but can not send any is there a box I haven't checked or something? If you are using Outlook Express or Windows Mail, the procedure is the same. Contact your Internet service Provider and get the POP and SMTP settings. It sounds like you have the POP setting correct, but the SMTP setting is not. Many times if you go to their web site, they will have step by step instructions for setting up your mail box. They might even provide a small download that will set it up for you.
