Signing E-Mail Petitions

This was sent in by a newsletter subscriber.

"To whom it all concerns: Just a word to the wise. E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other municipality. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address. Same with 'prayer chains' -- be wary. Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all this type of e-mail is, is to get names and 'cookie' tracking info for telemarketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for their own purposes. Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to '10' of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get good luck, or what ever, it has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender is getting a copy. Each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others that do."

I would also add that putting your name on a e-mail petition can lead to a great deal of aggravation. The names on the petition can be saved and added to another cause that you might not agree with or know anything about. Read this report from Break the Chain, particularly the last paragraph at the bottom of the page where it mentions Suzanne Dathe, www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/womenwar.html

Use your mouse wisely

Have you noticed your wrist hurting or your fingers getting sore after prolonged use of your computer mouse? I remember something that letter carriers used to do if they had a walking mail route. They would change shoes half way through the route and found that their feet did not hurt as much. I do the same thing with my computer mouse. Every month or so, I go from a traditional ball mouse to a trackball mouse. The big difference is that with a trackball mouse, you are pretty much using your thumb instead of moving the mouse around. Give it a try, the price of "MICE" has really gone down (Grin). Watch for sales, you can probably pick up a spare mouse for around $10.

Turn Windows Vista features on or off

Some programs and features that are included with Windows Vista must be turned on before you can use them. Certain other features are turned on by default, but you can turn them off if you don’t use them. To find out what these features are and how to turn them on or off, follow these instructions,
  • Click the Start button
  • click Control Panel
  • click Programs and then click Turn Windows features on or off
  • If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • To turn a Windows feature on, select the check box next to the feature. To turn a Windows feature off, clear the check box.
  • Click OK.

5 Mistakes you might be making when choosing a Password

Here is an article on choosing a safe password. The author makes some good points that should be taken seriously. I know that it is easy to choose a real simple password, but be aware that the more simple they are, the easier it is for a hacker to figure them out. www.rverscomputerhelp.com/safepassword.html
