Free Software Give Away

This was sent in by subscriber Larry, I have tried a couple of the free programs and they seem to be pretty good. "Here is a site for pay software that is free for a 24 hour period. A new software application is offered everyday".www.giveawayoftheday.com

Daylight Saving Time

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time (DST) will be extended in the United States. DST will start on March 11, 2007, which is three weeks earlier than usual, and it will end on November 4, 2007, which is one week later than usual. This results in a new DST period that is four weeks longer than in previous years. Unless certain updates are applied to your computer, the time zone settings for your computer's system clock may be incorrect during this four-week period. In particular, you must make sure that both your Windows operating system and your calendar programs are updated.(Microsoft)

Home users:
If you use Windows Vista or have Automatic Updates turned on, you may not be affected by the change in daylight saving time. If you want to confirm, follow the steps in the Daylight Saving Time Update Guide at this Microsoft web site, http://support.microsoft.com/dst2007

Have you ever gotten this message when trying to connect to a web site?? It can happen if you are on a wireless network. It happens more on the computer that is picking up the wireless signal then it does on the computer that has the router and is sending the wireless signal. We occasionally experience the same problem and it usually requires disconnecting the wireless card or restarting the computer to allow the card to reset. On Bobbi's computer is a USB adapter, if she unplugs it and plugs it back in, it usually solves the problem. If your card is built in, just restarting your computer should fix the problem.

Verizon DSL or Cable

The past five years I have had a cable connection for my Internet, it worked good until the cable would go out, then I would just have to wait until the signal returned. Sometimes it would be for a very short time, other times it would be several hours. The really bad thing was I was paying a hefty price to have the Internet connection (Around $49 a month). We moved to another location in December, cable Internet is not available here, but DSL was. I have to tell you I am much happier with the DSL. Here I pay $29.99 for the same speed that I had with cable. It is a verizon connection here, in your area it might be another company. My point is if you have been thinking about changing to a DSL connection, I would highly recommend it. Check it out in your area, you might be able to save a bunch of money and still have your high speed connection.

Computer class

Last Monday, I gave a computer class at Outdoor Resorts of Cathedral City, Ca (Near Palm Springs, Ca). I would like to thank Tom and Nancy and all the people that attended for their warm welcome. As usual there were lots of questions and interaction between the people who attended and myself. I usually leave with a lot of good info and hopefully I left some useful information that will make their computer experience more enjoyable. If any of you would like to have Bobbi and I speak at a gathering in the Southern California area, please send us an email at info@rverscomputerhelp.com

Computer term (Hacktivism)

Formed by combining “hack” with “activism,” hacktivism is the act of hacking into a Web site or computer system in order to communicate a politically or socially motivated message. Unlike a malicious hacker, who may disrupt a system for financial gain or out of a desire to cause harm, the hacktivist performs the same kinds of disruptive actions (such as a DoS attack) in order to draw attention to a cause. For the hacktivist, it is an Internet-enabled way to practice civil disobedience and protest. (Webopedia)
