Contacting Relatives while on the road
by Larry McLemore

Now you can get Portable Satellite Internet

CSP - Mechanical Breakdown protection for your RV, Travel Trailer, and Tow Vehicle!

One of the really neat things about having a computer while you are on the road, is you can do away with a cell phone and contact friends and relatives for free. Well maybe you should keep your cell phone for emergencies. All you need is a Internet connection and messenger. There are two that I have used. One is MSN Messenger, the other is AOL Instant Messenger.  You can get a $10 microphone almost anywhere. Now you are ready to talk anywhere in the world. If you want to do what my wife and I do, then you can pickup a PC Camera and let the people on the other end see you as you talk to them using your microphone. If they have a camera then you can see the grandkids as well. Both of the messenger services are free, in order for this to work, both parties must have the messenger service installed. You do not have to have MSN internet or AOL internet to use these services. We were always able to find a phone connection at a campground. A DSL or Cable connection works better. Sometimes the voice and picture get a little behind with a regular phone connection.

(UPDATE) There is another messenger on the scene now and it is a good one. It is called "Skype". It does not transfer files or allow the use of a camera yet, but it is a much clearer voice connection. It is free, you can find it at http://ui.skype.com/download.html
