Windows Easy Transfer

The new Windows Vista has a program for transferring files from your old computer to your new computer. Windows Easy Transfer is a simple all-in-one way of transferring several types of data at once, such as:

  • Favorites
  • User accounts
  • Music, pictures, and video
  • Program settings
  • E-mail settings and contacts
  • Internet settings

To use Windows Easy Transfer, one of the PCs must have Windows Vista on it, and the other one must have Vista or Microsoft Windows XP. (If the old PC has Microsoft Windows 2000, the file transfer portion of it will work, but the system and program settings will not transfer.) To find the Windows Easy Transfer program, go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Windows Easy Transfer.

There are several methods of transfer that you can use with Windows Easy Transfer. If you are connected to a home network, you can tranfer using it. If you have saved backups from the old computer on flash drives, CD's or DVD's, you can use that method. One other way is to buy a transfer cable to connect between the two computers, you can get one at most any computer store. When using Windows Easy Transfer, just follow the on screen insrtuctions.
