Using a router for Security by Larry McLemore

Using a Router for security
I touched on this a little in the above article, but let me tell you a little more. Most wireless routers now days come with a built in firewall. The more protection that you can have is better than just relying on the firewall that comes with Windows XP and others. Because Microsoft is so hated by many hackers, the firewall is always under attack. So it only makes since to get even more protection and a router can provide that. You do not have to use it to setup a network, just having it connected to your computer can offer security. Of course here when I say computer, I am talking about a desktop. You can connect them to your laptop if it is stationary and you are using a broadband connection to the Internet. Because the routers come with multiple ports, you could use it to let friends connect their laptops to the Internet when they come to visit. When you shop for a router make sure it has a firewall and I think if you are only going to have it connected to your desktop and not use it for a network, you can get one that is 802.11b. They are much less money now because the newer 802.11g units are replacing them. I have seen routers for as little as $20 after a rebate. This is awful cheap for the protection it will provide. Look for good deals at www.salescircular.com They can tell you who in your area has the best deal.
